Rethinking my photo strategy

Camera As I move forward with dustyd.net, I've decided that it's time to rethink how I handle my photos site.

My previous thinking was that I wanted to put as MANY of my pictures online as possible. This is a throwback to my college days, when we'd all get together and party & take pictures, and my website would serve as the viewing & comment arena for these photos. Many a comment war was started, and it was a source of much enjoyment.

Those days are long gone however. The comment wars are no more, and in all reality there's probably not that many people truly thumbing through my pics.

Well, that's not entirely true - A good portion of my site's traffic comes from my photos' inclusion on Google Images. Currently there are 795 images indexed from my site:

Google Images - dustyd.net

While most are harmless, there are a number that show me in various stages of obliterated-ness, or other not-so-appropriate situations. A quick review of the Google Image searches that return pictures from my site reveals such wonderful phrases as: "boobs" & "wet crotch".

Now, this search engine exposure really was my intention all along. I rename all of my pictures to include the title in the filename as well as the url. These SEO techniques have worked well, and I hope to be able to continue.

The problem of course, is that my site is my public face. Future employers and clients will undoubtably search the web for me, and I want to ensure that the image presented is as positive as possible. There's no need anymore to wear my social life on my sleve.

So, with that in mind, I'm going to shut down my photos site temporarily. When it comes back, it will be much leaner - a summary if you will. I think this should put my mind at ease...

Yeah, I can definitely see why you'd want to remove some of those "offending" photos. Although, I certainly wouldn't 't trash all of them. Maybe I'm just weird, but I believe they show character and prove that you're, in fact, human.

Also, you seem to be taking DustyD.net in more of a blog-oriented direction, so slimming down your photo services wouldn't be a bad idea. Besides, there are service like flickr and picasa that can aptly function as your photo archives.

Another solution that I've seen some people do is, quite simply, maintain two blogs - one for work and one for personal stuff. I've been thinking about doing this.

This wouldn't have anything to do with me taking advantage of your view count incrementer by refreshing the page hundreds of time to get a certain photo up to the most popular one would it?

I also agree with Zink regarding maintaining two blogs... I'm currently doing just that!

I actually think that the #1 picture now (me quite inebriated) is like that because of some British TV show message board...

They linked back to that picture and sent a flurry of people to look at it... I have no idea what it's all about.

Zink - I agree with you on leaving the pictures. I like having them there, and I also think they add a bit of depth to the site. It's not just a boring old blog.

Zink/Ian - As for maintaining two blogs, I sort of tried to do this already. http://dustyd.blogspot.com was setup partially for SEO, but mostly because I wanted to post stupid things up to a blog.

The problem is, I have a hard enough time updating ONE blog, let alone two. Note how that site hasn't been updated in a LONG TIME.

Also, it doesn't solve the problem of someone going out and searching google for "dusty davidson".

I think in the end I'm going to restructure my photos a little. Mostly it will just be removing the offending ones, and removing a bunch of the superfluous ones. Most of the albums would remain, but they would only contain the "best" pictures.

We'll see how that works... Who knows.. With my ADD, I have a tendency to change my mind on this stuff frequently.
