Hamburg, Germany #2

Tuesday, June 20, 2006 8:40 AM

We've been in Hamburg now for a couple of days, and I think we've pretty much exhausted all of the "sight-seeing" things to do here. This is good though, as it gives us a bit of a break from traveling, to slow down and relax a bit. Thus, the extra time on the internet, and time to read up on Paris before we get there and the REAL sight-seeing begins.

I should comment though on Berlin. The other day I meant to, but instead ended up rambling on about kebabs and the like. Berlin was AWESOME. Not only was the Fan Fest huge and crazy, the city itself is wonderful.

The first day, we walked completely through the city, from east to west, for the better part of the day. Using the Rick Steve's guide, we were able to orient ourselves quite nicely, and get a good general overview of the city. It was during that walk that we first encountered the Fan Fest as well, and all the fans were hanging out there.

It was the SECOND day however, that was simply amazing. We took an ALL DAY walking tour of Berlin, with a group of about 10 or so people. Our tour guide -- Barnaby -- was a quirky and comical English guy, who did a fantastic job explaining all the facts and figures surrounding not only the sites around Berlin, but the back stories and the reasonings as well.

To be honest, I really had no idea what the whole East - West thing was all about. Especially as it pertained to Berlin. At one point on the tour, he sat everyone down, and drew a map in the sand, explaining how Germany existed BEFORE World War II, and how it came to be the divided post-war Germany.

It was like a light bulb turned on and all of a sudden it all made sense. Awesome.

I really do not remember any part of any history class I've ever taken, going through this stuff. That's interesting. Oh well, it all makes sense, and the rest of the time in the city was a whole lot more interesting then :-)

3 minutes left.... aaah!

We're now waiting around for a night train out of here to Paris. I'll try to catch a few minutes in Paris to write about last night's game, and some other stuff, but I'm not sure I#ll be able to.. We've onlz got a day and a half there, and there's TONS to see... free time will be scarce... oh well!!!
